Doctor Who: Rosa - Review

In this week's episode, the Doctor and her friends travel back to Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 - November 30th, 1955 to be exact - and the cross paths with one of the biggest civil rights icons, Rosa Parks. Don’t forget - Spoilers!

On the cusp of history, a rogue time bandit recently released from a state of the art future prison is hell-bent on nudging history off its tracks and preventing the future from becoming a reality.

I really loved this episode. It is not uncommon for Doctor Who to use its story lines as a commentary on what is happening in current events, and with this episode the writers, show runner Chris Chibnall and author Malorie Blackman, there is no pulling their punches.

There were so many great moments in this episode that it is difficult to pick just one favorite, and I am not going to try. However, there is a really great message in this episode and it doesn't really hit you until the ending when in order to keep history from changing, Graham, the Doctor, Yaz, and Ryan must all keep their seats on the bus so that the iconic moment when Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat.

That message is that whether we want to or not, we are all a part of history.

Yaz has one of the best quotes in this episode, and it is a line that in today's world the end of this quote can be quite scary to people.

"I can be a police officer now because people like Rosa Parks fought those battles for me. For us. And in fifty-three years, they'll have a black president as a leader. Who knows where they'll be fifty years after that? That's proper change."

Where do you think our world will be in 50 years? Where do you want it to be in 50 years?

This episode like so many other Doctor Who episodes is a really incredible reality check. It makes you question what proper change will come if we all accept we are a part of history and that history is made every day. Maybe not national history, or universal history, but every day of our lives we make choices that create our own histories and prepare our legacies.

What do you want your legacy to be, what do you what your history to say about you?
