Kong: Skull Island

To everyone who told me Kong: Skull Island looked terrible… JOKE’S ON YOU!!

This sucker was GOOD y’all! Like, had a story and everything good! Samuel L even threw in a nod to Jurassic Park (if you don’t catch it, you’re not my friend) and it was oh-so perfect!

Now, I’m not going to get crazy here. This wasn’t the greatest film of all time (that’s John Wick) but it won’t leave you feeling like you just wasted $12 bucks and two hours of your time. My theater was packed and I think it’s safe to say, everyone left impressed by just how not-crappy the thing was.

I hope the production company doesn’t blow this by attempting to make a sequel because that really would be a waste of time and money. But this one, as it is, is definitely worth checking out.

Did anyone else notice that “Dr. Dre” and “Easy E” were together again in this too? Sorry, film nerd in me just loves that junk. The cast is enormous and you might have rolled your eyes when you saw John C. Riley pop into the frame in the trailer but his character was all kinds of necessary! He’s what kept it light because again, there was a story and it was kind of a downer so his comedic relief kept things moving.

I won’t spoil anything but, the one criticism I do have over all, is that they have this tribe John C’s character has lived with on the island that don’t do anything in the film. They don’t speak and they don’t assist our cast in getting home or fighting the bad stuff in the jungle. The fact that they don’t really get into the tribe and their culture (how they got there, why Kong doesn’t bother them, etc.) is what makes me think there’s possibility for another film (but they really should just let it go). But that’s really the only thing that had me scratching me head. The rest of the story pretty much makes sense.

They do brush over the other characters’ stories rather quickly as well but at least everyone’s reason for going to the island makes sense.

If you’re looking for something new to watch on a rainy day, I recommend Kong, it was surprisingly good
